Chromotherapy has very ancient origins, since traditional knowledge recognizes the important influence exerted by colors on our mood. The Egyptians and the Greeks, for example, painted the rooms of the health resorts or used particular colored stones or ointments to combat pains. The Romans exposed themselves to direct sunlight (heliotherapy) to cure certain ailments.
Today, research and studies conducted on the effects of chromotherapy confirm its value, praising the beneficial effects it has on the nervous and immune system.
The logic behind chromotherapy, therefore, is quite simple: it uses colors to influence the person’s mind and body, in order to help him find a functional balance and a general feeling of psychological and physical well-being. One of the basic assumptions of color therapy is the fact that it is essentially light and, as a light source, it is endowed with energy.
How does it work?
By absorbing the colors in different ways, it’s possible – through the energies they radiate – to help change the electromagnetic and energetic balance of the body. In fact, every single part of the body, according to chromotherapy, is endowed with a particular “level of energetic vibration”, each of which contributes to creating, in a harmonious way, a particular energetic identity. Each individual is therefore endowed with his or her own personal energy level which must be maintained in order to experience a constant feeling of well-being.
When it gets sick, the organ affected by the disease seems alterated in its vibration level. Chromotherapy, through a color bath, helps to restore the optimal energy level. It is important to underline that the practices suggested by chromotherapy should not be substituted for drug therapy or therapies indicated by doctors: it is advisable – under the supervision of your trusted doctor – to combine them together and experience alternative therapies as moments to concentrate your energies, in order to obtain a general feeling of psycho-physical well-being.
I propose below a brief description of the basic colors used in chromotherapy and their main effects.
Red: it represents the color that provides physical, psychic and sexual charge and energy. It is also used for some symptoms of depression, sexual disorders (frigidity, impotence), joint pain, flu symptoms, fatigue, drowsiness and fatigue. Red also helps to raise blood pressure and body temperature.
Blue: Blue symbolizes serenity, calm and inner peace. For these reasons, blue has a noticeable relaxing effect. On a psycho-physical level, it helps to reduce insomnia, states of nervousness and agitation, blood pressure and heartbeat. It also has beneficial effects on the liver, relieves inflammatory states and reconciles concentration
Yellow: it represents energy constantly changing and that arouses an immediate feeling of well-being, joy and a desire for change. On a psycho-physical level, yellow helps eliminate toxins, digestion and the digestive system in general. It is also useful in times of lack of appetite and mental fatigue.
Green: is the color that helps fight migraines and anxious states. From a psychic point of view, in addition to having relaxing effects, it helps to regain determination and tenacity.
Orange: in chromotherapy, it’s used to treat thyroid and asthmatic problems and helps, from a psychic point of view, to regain optimism and happiness.
Violet: it’s the color used for problems related to the skin, kidneys and bladder. From a psychic point of view, however, it increases and supports the imagination.
Indigo: it has toning and purifying effects on the blood, stimulates hearing, sight and smell.
